A Chlorine Water Filter Guide
Chlorine has been used in our water filtration processing for more than a century. It is widely known that chlorine is a disinfectant and it has therefore been added to water before the water is distributed to our households. However, this is not necessarily a good idea as Chlorine can create problems of its own.
Once Chlorine has been added to our water, it also needs to be removed again before we consume it. This article looks at why Chlorine is added to the general water system in the first place, and then it will look at the reasons why we need to use a Chlorine water filter to remove it before consuming.
Why is Chlorine added to our Drinking Water?
Since the late 19th century, chlorine has been employed for treating infections caused due to the presence of microorganisms.
Chlorine has also been added to water in order to prevent outbreaks of such infectious diseases like diarrhoea that would be passed through water.
Even today, this role of Chlorine in the process of water purification still remains. Chlorine is added to our water supply to disinfect it so that it is purer for general human consumption. The process is called ‘chlorination of water’.
Why is Chlorine Considered Harmful?
Despite the known fact that Chlorine does perform a very important role in the process of water filtration, it is also essential that no traces of it are left behind before we consume it. These traces are easily distinguishable by you in the strong taste that they give to the water, and the smell that is a very distinct odour caused by the presence of the Chlorine in the water, and that can be really quite strong. In addition to the smell, the taste may make chlorinated water undrinkable for many people.
But the dangers of Chlorine being present in our water are much more than just its strong odour and taste. Chlorine can be toxic when consumed in high levels. Chemically, Chlorine is given the classification of a poison!
Research studies have revealed that Chlorine can react with other chemicals that may also be present in the water and cause trihalomethanes. This is a class of compounds that include Chloroform and Bromoform. Prolonged exposure to these chemicals over time can result in being carcinogenic.
Women who consume chlorinated water over a long period of time may have a higher tendency to develop breast cancer.
Free Radicals Damage
Medical science is becoming increasingly concerned about the role that free radicals play in conditions that cause deterioration in human health. Free radicals can cause undesirable reactions to take place in the body, including acceleration of the ageing processes and causing a variety of health impairments. The presence of Chlorine in food and water is now being linked directly to a condition known as atherosclerosis.
There are therefore a few reasons why it has become necessary to consider using a Chlorine water filter on your water supply.
Since Chlorine is continuously added to our water supplies by the authorities, but not removed from it, it becomes our own responsibility to filter out the Chlorine from the water at the level of our own household.
A Chlorine water filter will remove not just Chlorine, but also the harmful trihalomethanes that it forms. The result is an odour-free water supply that is also biologically and chemically pure.
